Have you ever thought about your health as it relates to your finances?
I imaginemany of us have thought about it in times of financial difficulties. Stress has been linked to Illness.
I’m sure if you haven’t already put together a financial plan with a professional, it’s on your to do list. But, what about a plan for your future health?
Good health and the journey to a good plan for your future health is a balancing act. My own personal health component was so severely out of balance that my body turned on me. I had to stop working to figure out what was wrong and search to find what the right balance was for me. Most of us don’t stop to think about the various areas that are critical to our overall well-being. I've learned that we have to tend to the various dimensions to stay in balance.
The dimensions are:
Take a look at the pie chart. It demonstrates how each piece or dimension plays a role. Without one of the pieces, we're not whole. I recall one of the pieces that was missing for me...Social. Work and family was all that I felt I could fit into my week. Today, when I see a post of friends on Facebook that are enjoying a night out together and I'm in the picture, I first recall the fun we had, and, as I'm learning, I also know now that it fills the Social pie piece and helps to balance my life and health. When my husband happily finishes a half marathon, he feels a sense of accomplishment, and, also knows that he has fulfilled the Physical part of the pie and feels more of a balance of good health.
Consider making your own pie chart with the 7 dimensions of health in mind. In each piece of pie, list what you are currently doing to fulfill that particular dimension. For example, if you meet every month for a book club consider listing that in the Intellectual pie piece. Exercising your brain is an important component to the whole pie and to your good health.
If you find a few pieces missing or lacking much content, don't worry. It's a journey. Be kind to yourself. Consider choosing just one piece at a time to fill and see how it goes.
After spending quite a bit of time trying to get the components of my life in balance, I found myself healthier and drawn back to the financial planning and investment profession. Helping people to be informed about their choices in planning for their future now includes planning for their future health as well. Vitality as we age is so important to all of us and integrating your health plan with your wealth plan can give you even more peace of mind.
